Apple Security Updates July 2019 Posted by Vidita V Koushik. Apple released a set of security updates to address vulnerabilities in its various products. About 49 vulnerabilities were identified and fixed by Apple in these security updates. Out of the 49, 44 CVEs were relevant to MacOS, while 23 CVEs were reported for iCloud, Safari, and iTunes. This document describes the security content of macOS Mojave 10.14.6 Supplemental Update 2, Security Update 2019-005 High Sierra, and Security Update 2019-005 Sierra. About Apple security updates For our customers' protection, Apple doesn't disclose, discuss, or confirm security issues until an investigation has occurred and patches or releases are available.
When Apple updated its operating systems last month (see “Apple Releases macOS 10.14.6, iOS 12.4, watchOS 5.3, tvOS 12.4, and More,” 22 July 2019), the company’s engineers accidentally reintroduced a previously patched vulnerability that allowed jailbreaking. To close that vulnerability and prevent device jailbreaking, Apple has now released a series of emergency updates: macOS Mojave 10.14.6 Supplemental Update, iOS 12.4.1, watchOS 5.3.1, and tvOS 12.4.1.

Apple actually released macOS Mojave 10.14.6 Supplemental Update a few weeks ago, saying at the time that it fixed “an issue that may prevent certain Macs from waking from sleep properly”—see “macOS Mojave 10.14.6 Supplemental Update” (2 August 2019). Apple’s description now says that this updated version “resolves an issue that may cause certain Mac notebooks to shut down during sleep.” In addition, it fixes a bug that can degrade performance when working with very large files and another that could prevent Pages, Keynote, Numbers, iMovie, and GarageBand from updating.

- The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) encourages users and administrators to review the Apple security pages for the following products and apply the necessary updates: iOS 12.4; tvOS 12.4; Safari 12.1.2; macOS Mojave 10.14.6, Security Update 2019-004 High Sierra, Security Update 2019-004 Sierra; watchOS 5.3.
- For Apple, releasing iOS 12.4.1 must now be their top priority to give users an escape route, as well as emergency upgrades for iOS 9 and 10 (it has happened before). That said, so far Apple has.

Apple Security Update 14.4
Here’s how to install the updates:
- macOS 10.14.6 Supplemental Update: Install this 1.25 GB update from System Preferences > Software Update.
- iOS 12.4.1: Go to Settings > General Software Update. The update for an iPhone X is 99.3 MB.
- watchOS 5.3.1: Use the iPhone’s Watch app—go to Watch > General > Software Update. The update for an Apple Watch Series 4 is 55.4 MB.
- tvOS 12.4.1: If automatic updates aren’t on, you can update your Apple TV HD or Apple TV 4K by going to Settings > System > Software Updates.
Given the severity of the vulnerability, we advise installing these updates as soon as possible. While some people like jailbreaking their devices—and it’s certainly your right to do so—the security vulnerabilities that make jailbreaking possible by definition give attackers root-level access to your devices. Put bluntly, we don’t jailbreak our devices, and we don’t recommend that you do either.
In the last few days, Apple has staggered security updates for many of its products, including the recently unveiled macOS Catalina.
Safari, tvOS, iPadOS, iOS, iCloud, iTunes updates
The Safari update delivered fixes for 14 CVE-numbered Webkit and WebKit Process Model vulnerabilities, most of which are memory corruption issues that may lead to arbitrary code execution if maliciously crafted web content is processed (i.e., users visit malicious web pages).
The same flaws were also fixed in the tvOS, iPadOS and iOS update (for iOS 13).
In addition to those, tvOS 13.2 fixes memory corruption issues in several other components, two kernel flaws, and an authentication issue (CVE-2019-8803) that may allow a local attacker to login to the App Store account of a previously logged in user without valid credentials.

Many of these have also been fixed in iOS 13.2 and iPadOS 13.2, including CVE-2019-8803. Other patched issues of note are those for:
Apple Security Updates 2019 2020
- CVE-2019-8793, discovered by a Florida 6th grader, which may allow a local user to record the screen without a visible screen recording indicator, and
- CVE-2019-8789, a validation issue that may allow attackers to leverage a maliciously crafted iBooks file to get at user information.

The contents of the iOS 12.4.3 security update are currently unavailable, and so are those for watchOS 5.3.3, but the watchOS 6.1 update brings (among other things) the WebKit and kernel fixes, and fixes for CVE-2019-8803 (the App Store account issue) and CVE-2019-8747, a memory corruption flaw in the AppleFirmwareUpdate kernel extension, which could allow a malicious application to execute arbitrary code with kernel privileges.
The and iCloudupdates (for Windows 7 through 10) are pretty lightweight: the Webkit fixes take most of the space.

macOS Catalina update
The macOS Catalina update (10.15.1) and the two security updates for macOS High Sierra and Mojave are, expectedly, more hefty. They contain (among other things):
- Several kernel fixes
- Updated third-party libraries (e.g., libxslt, libxml2)
- Fixes for three flaws affecting CUPS, the maOS printing system
- Fixes for the App Store account auth issue (CVE-2019-8803), a privilege escalation flaw in File Quarantine (CVE-2019-8509), a variety of memory corruption issues in the various drivers, two flaws in AppleGraphicsControl, one of which could allow an application to execute arbitrary code with system privileges (CVE-2019-8716).
